Tattle and Wrye Column May 2017 edition

From the desk of
DONA PENZA TATTLE, ESQ.
AND
ASSOCIATE WRYE BALDERDASH

Greetings,

"Well, it is finally here... again!" Wrye announced as he finger-brushes imaginary dust off his shoulders.

Twirling about in her slimming new gown, (been on a veggie lifestyle aka DIET) extra long to hide her orthopedic shoes and compression socks, Tattle added, "Yes it is!  The following are all the nominees for the Second Tattle and Wrye Book Award.  Otherwise known as:

THE SECOND FABULOUS FICTION FABRICATOR FEATHER IN THE FEDORA, WRYE TOAST FROM BALDERDASH AND TATTLE... JAM OPTIONAL AWARD, DENOTING THAT BALDERDASH BABBLES AND TATTLE PRATTLES AND GOOD WRITERS WRITE WELL...
TAA DAA!  WITH BOW AND CURTSY

"This was not easy, each and every book reviewed deserved a finalist spot, but we sniff-sniff had to pick only six." Tattle dabbed her eyes with gloved fingertips.

"Five," Wrye corrected.

"Six... I added another one. Couldn't help meself."

Wrye sighs. "Errr... actually seven. I couldn't resist either."

Announcing the title and author, followed by a partial, though pertinent, part of our review.

UNTAMED (Duty Bound #3) by J.S. Marlo

“Wow! Another well-plotted, nicely paced, and mystery oriented story in the third of the Duty Bound Series. UNTAMED has not lost any of the steam or power of the previous two books. It is a stand-alone yet for those who read the first two, it has a few past references to keep the connection alive. Once again, J.S. Marlo has taken us on a journey filled with twists and complications that leave us guessing. There is just enough romance to make you cheer on not only the individual characters but the couple, hopefully to be a family. Hannah, her son Rory and even the dog Snowflake are endearing. Avery beams hero in every possible way, yet has enough tarnish to make him real. This is the perfect read with an unexpected climax and satisfying end. I’m looking forward to more from J.S. Marlo.”

SEDUCING THE DARKNESS, Darkness, I by Shiela Stewart

“It certainly has enough sizzle to satisfy the erotic hunger, but that isn’t the only thing that keeps the heart pumping. The entire book has a tempo, like listening to a drummer who doesn’t let up. It keeps getting louder and faster. Sometimes, you have to remind yourself to breathe. My ole heart nearly couldn’t keep up. I like my paranormal, but not everyone can write a tale that is this enjoyable while maintaining unrelenting drama, intensity, complexity, and sexy characters with engaging personality. It is a well told story and has you yearning to gobble up the next in the series. If you haven’t read it, read it. If you have read it, get the next book in the series. To paraphrase a starlet of years gone by, “It’s a wild and crazy kind of vamp ride.”

DOORS by Joanne Renaud

“For me the bait and hook comes directly from the interplay between Jackie and the quirky Orne. The banter keeps you grinning, and the romance touches even an old crotchety guy like me. You watch the relationship develop and cheer them onward, and you also watch as Jackie grows stronger as each, but not every riddle, gets solved. At the same time, she doesn’t need Orne to make her complete. She is very reflective of the strong independent women of our modern age. She is a refreshing heroine. Thumbs up for DOORS! This is a remarkable sci-fi tale dripping with delightful romance.”

ABSENCE OF LIGHT by Rick Giernoth

“This story has all the elements of horror woven with the eternal fight between good and evil in a dramatic, fast-paced page turner. The characters are well-developed, and multi-layered. They reflect the true nature of humanity with both its flaws and nobility. Rick Giernoth has a unique take on an old theme. He did not just put a fresh coat on the plot line, he created his own palette of gory colors. Rick’s story is sharp, crisp and, yes, downright scary. Personally, I read it with a lot of lights blazing, and still found myself looking over my shoulder and haven’t slept without a nightlight since. No matter your personal beliefs, this gives you pause to consider evil at its most horrific. Plus, it has more than its share of unpredicted twists and shocks. If you want a thrilling ride of terror, read ABSENCE OF LIGHT!”

HOME WORLD by Michael W. Davis

"I've enjoyed everyone of Big Mike's books, and this one will not disappoint. If his name wasn't on the book, you would still know it was his work. He has a unique style of writing that mesmerizes, brings you right into the inner voice of the characters and the inner conflict of the plot.  And just when you think you are about to figure out the ah-ha moment, you discover you didn't and there is another ah-ha smacking you upside the head.  His talent with plot development, depth of character and realistic dialogue was remarkable. I enjoyed this book tremenduously, and recommend it needs a place on your cyber bookshelf!"

TRAITOR KNIGHT by Keith W. Willis

“I can’t say enough about the talent oozing from the storyline. There is never any down time with the plot, it keeps rolling and picking up steam. Keith is a story-teller puppeteer, just pulling our strings as we dance to his magnificent prose. Through it all, you see Keith’s unique writing technique. It is not an imitation of the ole Masters yet it is still fantasy at its finest with that wonderful wash of enchantment that brings out the possibility that magic can happen. I have read all of Keith W. Willis’ work, and I do believe TRAITOR KNIGHT is now my favorite.  Hmmm, that is until he writes a new book, that new one might end up taking top spot. Each book gets better!”

SILENT AUTUMN by Veronica H. Hart

“There is a serious underpinning to this story that keeps your heart racing and your thoughts riveted to the storyline.  If you are able to put the book down, you are still thinking about the possibilities that could happen. The writing is snappy and quick, and the twist and turns are unexpected. Yet, here and there a campy light-hearted moment occurs that makes you smile.  Only, don’t get too attached to that smile, soon you’ll be driven by the story’s intensity once more. Can’t wait to see more from Veronica H. Hart.”

Congratulations to all our finalist!
